If its one thing about living in the city, it&rsquo;s needing to heavily rely on public transport.

Not many Malaysians are fortunate enough to own a car and some also may differ saying that using public transport is better and more cost efficient and it&rsquo;s more convenient. Although that the statement is true, many now debate whether owning a car is actually better than using public transport as the prices of e-hailing fares have surged up the ceiling.

Many of us need to still use Grab specifically when going home or to work as most stations (such as busses or even trains) don&rsquo;t directly access the housing area you might be living in.
Transport Minister Datuk Dr. Wee Ka Siong has now called upon platforms to give an explanation and clarification of the alleged price increase as high as 400% during peak hours after many have complained about expensive fares they have to pay recently.

&ldquo;An increase from RM20 to RM70 in the current situation is seen as burdensome to the people, so I think as a policymaker, we will see if any party is taking advantage to make a profit&rdquo; said Dr. Wee after visiting Ampang Park LRT on Sunday 22nd May.
He&rsquo;s requested for the Land Public Agency (APAD) to review and the issue and ask the companies to explain the price hike situation with expectations for an answer to come up in the next day or two.
APAD says that one of the few factors effecting the price is the working environment of drivers, passengers, service providers and others must be taken into count. This is to ensure the balance of supply and demand in e-hailing as both the service provider and user must have a mutual agreement for bookings via their apps while showing the fare amount.

If it isn&rsquo;t bad enough, the price hike is also affecting food delivery services. Customers even have the option for a premium queue order where it gets you the food faster, but it seems that many are ending up waiting just as long if not longer for food during peak hours.
For example, Food deliveries around the Kelana Jaya area to those residents in SS7 went up from RM2/ RM3 during off peak hours and RM5 delivery during peak to RM4.50/ RM5 during off peak and up to almost RM9 during peak hours.
With the reopening of economic sectors, services have seen a drop of approximately 25% in riders and at least a 10% of delivery food demand dropped as well.

Since prices are sky rocketing, many people are resorting to using Taxi&rsquo;s again as they offer more affordable prices. In fact, taxi passengers had increased by 40% lately said Combined Taxi Across Malaysia president Kamadurin Mohd Hussain.
Another reason towards the price hike of e-hailing services is due to the government not introducing controlled fares that taxi&rsquo;s have. During rush hour, due to competition, they take advantage to raise the prices due to high demand and as most of us are busy and want to get things done quick, we will automatically just take it.
Kamarudin suggests that the fairs of e-hailing services till still increase and it&rsquo;s almost impossible for it to go out of control if the number of taxi&rsquo;s decrease.
Fares on taxi&rsquo;s work differently as they start at RM3 and passengers will be charged RM0.10 for every 115m travelled.

Many people consider themselves as brave, but are you brave enough to even think about carrying a deceased body with you? Well that&rsquo;s exactly what had occurred in Thailand, where a 25-year-old volunteered to retrieve a man's body out of the forest, and here&rsquo;s why.
A rescue team was assigned to transport the body of a middle-aged man who was found dead in the forest in Wiang Pa Pao district in Chiang Rai province.
The Siam Ruamjai Foundation&rsquo;s ambulance could not reach the exact location where the dead body was found, therefore the rescue team had to ride motorbikes for over an hour in order to reach the site. &nbsp;The original plan was to make their very own bamboo stretcher to carry the body out, however that would have the taken the team an extra hour to cut the bamboo trees, and make a stretcher similar to the image below.

As the night was approaching, and rain clouds forming in the sky, Jaturon Duangrat, a 25-year-old member of the rescue team, &nbsp;bravely volunteers to carry the body to the ambulance. &ldquo;This way, we can save time,&rdquo; the young male said to his colleagues, as he offers to take the body on his motorbike, by carefully wrapping the dead man&rsquo;s corpse onto his back with the help of his team, before beginning his difficult ride out of the forest.
The operation actually took place in late May, however only now has it become widely known when an unnamed friend of Jaturon had shared the story onto social media. Many Thai netizens praised Jaturon for his bravery and dedication in performing his duties and completing his mission.

Recently, a post had gone viral on social media with over 7.6K retweets and 18.5K likes. A Malaysian woman named Eleanor had called out a property on Airbnb racist as the agent had turned down their booking due to her boyfriend being an Indian.

Eleanor had stated that she and her boyfriend were planning to book a homestay for his family&rsquo;s annual Christmas trip and had called up the property agent to clarify some questions about the property before deciding to book it.
She and the agent had also spoked in mandarin during their conversation and initially all went smoothly. But things took a turn when her boyfriend reached out to the same agent as he was asked to declare his race upon asking about the Airbnb.
Typically, everyone would get confused on why someone would do such thing and naturally he had asked upon the matter. The agent replied that they would only rent it to Chinese and Malay people and had also cancelled their booking following the conversation.

I too have faced something similar to this when my friends booking was rejected due to him being Chinese.

#Racist Airbnb Host Cancels Couples Booking Due To “No Indians Allowed” Rule

Right now, the South Asian island is in its worst economic meltdown yet, after years of struggling with financing imports of essentials like food, medicine and fuel. With not enough foreign currency to purchase petrol and diesel, international fuel shipments have been prolonged and will only be available after two weeks, meanwhile local supplies are quickly running out causing a nationwide crisis.
In a press conference on Monday night, Cabinet spokesperson Bandula Gunawardana said private vehicles will be barred from buying fuel until July 10.

Sri Lanka&rsquo;s economy was hit hard by the pandemic and populist tax cuts, and as a result, tourism stopped, fuel supplies are drying out and energy prices are now the highest it has ever been in the country. Not only are there shortages of food and fuel, however there have also been power cuts and lack of medicine, sparking major public protests for the past few months. Bankers, doctors and nurses also joined the protest to demand the government to quickly resolve the severe fuel shortage, as they too struggle to find enough fuel to get to work, despite being designated essential workers.

Malaysia facing rising fuel prices as well
Of course, the increase of fuel prices is a common occurrence, as almost the entire world, including &nbsp;Malaysia have experienced their local fuel costs going up in the past year, and naturally many Malaysians (event the super-rich) are feeling the pinch of the expensive fuel prices.
The government recently announced in a statement that they will be maintaining the ceiling prices of RON95 at RM 2.05 per litre, RON97 at RM4.84 per litre, and as for diesel, it will remain at RM 2.15 per litre. These retail fuel prices will be effective from June 30th 2022 until July&nbsp; 6th 2022.

Recently the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) Youth Chief, Ahmad Fadhli Saari has been hit with hard criticisms over his visit to a cinema in Kuala Lumpur in support of the premier of the local film &ldquo;Mat Kilau&rdquo;.

As some of you may know the state of Kelantan does not have a single cinema as the party rules PAS had deemed it a source of maksiat (social ills).

According to the state Deputy Menteri besar, Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah, the state has not received any complains about the absence of cinemas in the state over the last 30 years of rulership under PAS. He even stated that the people of the state don&rsquo;t think that a cinema is a necessity for them.
&ldquo;We (the PAS government) discussed at length the pros and cons of cinema during the time of (former menteri besar) Tok Guru (the late Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat) based on the circumstances and needs. So, we decided not to allow cinemas (to operate in Kelantan) and that is our stand,&rdquo; he said during an interview with YouTuber Feng Ren Guan.

Why go to a cinema when you have Netflix?

One thing he argued is stating that those in Kelantan don&rsquo;t require a cinema as they can watch movies via steaming services or other platforms online.
But when you think of this, wouldn&rsquo;t streaming movies via Netflix be worse for those who are religious in Kelantan as some Netflix if not most movies and shows do not have any censorship.

A customer who purchased the beverage mentioned that he couldn&rsquo;t even tell that it was made out of toilet water. In fact, he even said he wouldn&rsquo;t mind having the drink in the fridge. &ldquo;I mean, it tastes just like beer, and I like beer&rdquo;.
How is this possible?

Since Singapore is a small country, many of their recourses are coming from recyclable items. NEWBrew uses NEWater which is a brand of water recycled from sewage water around the island. &nbsp;
The recycled water process has been going on since 2003 as it helps improve the island&rsquo;s water security. The whole purpose of introducing the beer is also to help educate Singaporeans on the importance of sustainable water use and recycling.
The idea first sparked when the world&rsquo;s supply of fresh water had been under stress as up to 2.7 billion people find water scarce for at least one month a year. But as time went by, the idea of recycling sewage water had been largely accepted to overcome the water crisis.
Did you know that other than Singapore, countries like Israel have also incorporated such methods and cities such as London and Los Angeles are slowly starting to do something similar.
Don&rsquo;t worry, the water you&rsquo;re drinking has gone through a tedious disinfecting process which involves ultraviolet light passing through the liquids advance membranes to remove the contaminant particles. Once the process is over, the out outcome is just purely water and water is a key essential towards the chemical reactions that happen when the beer is being brewed.

NEWBrew are not the only ones using recycled sewage for their beer but companies such as Nya Carnegie who are paired with Carlsberg and IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute are planning to launch a pilsner with purified sewage soon. In Canada, researchers from the University of Calgary and US Water Technology company Xylem are also in works of rolling out their very own version of a recycled sewage water beer.
Are people convinced that using recycled sewage is the way to go?

So far, not really. The thing with the stigma of thinking recycled sewage water still disgusts many people. A Singaporean student mentioned that there&rsquo;s many other beers around and he&rsquo;d rather pick something made out of normal water.
Meanwhile, others who had personally tried the beer themselves said that they wouldn&rsquo;t of even guessed that the beer was made out of recycled sewage water. They enjoyed the taste as it was refreshing and light which made it perfect for the tropical climate in Singapore.
If you&rsquo;re still in Singapore, you better be quick as the brewery expects the stocks to run out by the end of July as their first batch has completely been sold out. The brewer also says that they will assess the market response first before deciding if they&rsquo;ll make another batch of the beer.
At first thought, it sounds bad but when you really think of it, modern technology can definitely eliminate all the bacteria out of the sewage water and it&rsquo;s safe to consume. Like if it wasn&rsquo;t safe, people wouldn&rsquo;t have implemented it in the first place am I right?

Need A Beer? How About One Made From Recycled Sewage Water!

When living in the busy city, we can&rsquo;t help to think that we need more greenery within the city. When you look at most major cities, there&rsquo;s at least either one large section of green such as Central Park in New York City or even a park within the city such as the Lake Gardens Park or Taman Tugu right here in KL.

If you&rsquo;re one to go outdoors a lot or perhaps go to Bangsar often, you may have seen a place called Kebun-Kebun Bangsar which is a community garden within the city. It&rsquo;s situated along Lorong Bukit Pantai, Bangsar, where there&rsquo;s Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) electric pylons.
In fact, Kebun-Kebun Bangsar is violating their temporary occupancy license (TOL) for their nursery purpose as they had just been slapped with an eviction notice by the Federal Territory office of the department of the director-general of lands and mines (JKPTG).

The post was shared via their Instagram page where the notice was dated 23 June 2022 where they are in violation of Section 425 (1) of the National Land Code for using land located underneath high-voltage power lines owned and maintained by TNB without permission.
The violation states that they can be fined RM500,000 and jailed for five years if they fail to comply and remove all structures on the property. Additionally, the office states that they will not be entertaining any appeals after sending out the notice.
Violation of terms of license
Malay Mail reported that the office stands by the decision to evict the garden after violating the TOL. According to Datuk Muhammad Yasir from JKPTG, the office does encourage the gardening efforts but they are still required to abide by stipulated conditions.
&ldquo;Conditions for approved nurseries include the types of crops and no permanent structures are allowed under power lines, according to technical specifications from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB),&rdquo; said Yasir.
The eviction notice also comes by written and verbal complaints submitted by the residents of the area due to the garden rearing live stock within the property. The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had ordered the garden to remove the animals back in 2020 as the chickens, ducks and sheep within the property had caused the to be full of flies, noise disturbances from the animals as well as odour pollution within the housing area.
Hopes for Kebun-Kebun Bangsar to continue on running

62-year-old Ng Sek San who founded the community garden had thanked all of those who helped maintained the garden which was backed by the DBKL on a two-year license. &nbsp;However, he failed to realise that the city did not extend their license beyond 2018 and only came to know about it when they received the eviction notice.
Although several letters of appeal were submitted to the relevant authorities, there had been no avail. Even 19 out of 20 of the residents who live adjacent to the garden had supported them.
&ldquo;Every week, thousands come to our farm to acquaint themselves with nature. We want to be left alone to do our work peacefully. It must be protected and safeguarded by everyone, including City Hall and the other authorities.&rdquo; he said.
Farm praised by Prime Minister
Just recently before the eviction notice, Prime Minister Dato&rsquo; Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had praised the farm as fruits, vegetable and flowers have been harvested from the land and been distributed to those in need within the community as well as soup kitchens.

Additionally, the garden within the city had played a role to educate society on the effects of climate change.
Following the eviction threat, Ng fears that future volunteers will be driven away and it will be harder to maintain the garden if they are able to continue so.
It&rsquo;s hard to come by good things in life and sometimes I question, why can&rsquo;t authorities give a bit of slack and also talk it out with those occupying the land. At least they didn&rsquo;t build a full-on building on the property as a garden which helps supply the community is much more beneficial. 
I guess we&rsquo;ll have to wait and see what will happen to the garden but let&rsquo;s hope it&rsquo;s here to stay.
