Football legend Diego Maradona has passed away after suffering a heart attack at his home in Tigre. He was only 60 years old.

Maradona had only recently celebrated his 60th birthday on the 30th of October and was hospitalized a few days later as he was feeling unwell for several days. He complained about fatigue and low spirits.  After a medical test, it was confirmed he had a serious subdural hematoma (blood clot in the brain for those who don’t know) and had undergone surgery. It was reported that the operation was a success.

As he showed signs of recovering well, Maradona had insisted he could return home. His personal physician, Leopoldo Luque, had disagreed with him and insisted Maradona to follow the doctor’s orders to stay a bit longer.

On Wednesday morning of 25 November, he had suffered a cardiac arrest and paramedics who were present at the scene unfortunately could not revive him.

The news of his death was confirmed by the Argentine national team’s official Twitter account as they bid farewell to Maradona with a tweet “Goodbye, Diego. You will be #Eternal in every heart of the football planet.”

During his career, Maradona had represented Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys as a player before advancing his career as club managers for the likes of Racing Club, Dorados, Gimnasia and the Argentina national team.

Maradona was the key to Argentina’s 2nd world cup win in 1986 as they prevailed over West Germany in the finals. He had even scored the most iconic and controversial goal in the history of the World Cup known as “Hand of God” and was dubbed “Goal of the century”.
